The Dutch Monarchy and Its Colonial Past: Why History Matters

How deeply was the Dutch monarchy involved in colonialism? And what does that history mean for the Netherlands today?
In The Dutch Monarchy and Its Colonial History, 1600–2025, historian Gert Oostindie explores the relationship between the House of Orange-Nassau and the Dutch colonial empire over four centuries. Drawing on an extensive scholarly research project, the book examines the monarchy’s connections to colonial expansion, slavery, economic exploitation, and the eventual process of decolonization.
As Mark Beumer highlights in his review for Kleio-Historia, the book offers an important distinction between directly determining colonial policy and contributing to the system that sustained it. Although the monarchy’s political influence changed over time, the House of Orange benefited from colonial trade and the prestige of empire. The book also addresses how the monarchy’s relationship with this history has evolved, culminating in King Willem-Alexander’s public apology for the House of Orange-Nassau’s involvement in slavery in 2023 and the independent study commissioned into the family’s colonial past.
The significance of this history extends beyond academic research. It has implications for education, public memory, and contemporary discussions about historical responsibility. As Beumer concludes, “Historical responsibility entails more than just acknowledging past events; it also requires an ongoing willingness to confront their consequences in the present.”
